On September 9, 2026, the Advanced Education Program (AEP) along with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) hosted a spring roll (nem rán) making competition with first year students from AEP-TAUF and exchange students from Japan’s Hiroshima University.

The event aimed to provide exchange students from Hiroshima University with a memorable cultural experience, while also strengthening international friendship and cooperation. By learning to prepare one of Vietnam’s traditional dishes, students gained both culinary skills and cultural insights in a lively and interactive setting.

During the competition, students were challenged to make fried spring rolls from scratch; from preparing fresh ingredients to carefully rolling and frying each piece. The activity encouraged teamwork, creativity, and attention to detail, while also highlighting the importance of food as a bridge between cultures.

The cooking session created an open and engaging atmosphere where Hiroshima University students asked questions about the origins of spring rolls, their variations across Vietnam, and the role of traditional dishes in family gatherings. Meanwhile, AEP-TUAF freshmen guided their peers through the process, sharing stories about Vietnamese culinary traditions and the cultural values tied to food.

A total of 21 students took part in the competition, including 9 exchange students from Hiroshima University and 12 AEP-TUAF freshmen. Divided into three teams of seven, (Team Super Rollers, Team Bánh Mi, and Team Ice Cream) participants worked together to prepare their spring rolls with creativity and enthusiasm while maintaining a good competitive spirit.

Beyond learning how to create nem, the students also gained valuable knowledge about the ingredients that go into this traditional dish, deepening their appreciation for Vietnamese culinary heritage.

After the competition, the Japanese exchange students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to experience Vietnamese cuisine firsthand. Many noted that the activity deepened their understanding of Vietnam’s culture and strengthened their connection with local students.

The Spring Roll Making Competition not only showcased Vietnam’s rich culinary heritage but also reflected AEP-TUAF’s commitment to promoting international cooperation and cultural exchange. Through such interactive programs, the Advanced Education Program continues to inspire students to embrace global learning opportunities while celebrating diversity and tradition.
